For cross-country schooling my number one recommendation has to be Tweseldown. I LOVE this place. Newly revamped in September 2015, the jumps are amazing, for beginners right through to professionals, this place rocks. The sandy going is great for dodgy legs and soft for hitting the deck. The owners are courteous and organized and the rates reasonable.
COST: £30 PER HORSE
Well you can get a good set of how jumps in quite a few yards it has to be said. This really comes down to distance for a large part. In my experience I would say both Gasstons Yard mentioned above and Pachesham Equestrian have a great set of show jumps and hold regular shows.
This XC course has literally just opened (Oct 15) and it is as fresh as a Daisy !
Gasstons XC Course in Headley, Surrey. I may be biased as this is actually hacking distance from me but the jumps are fantastic.
From brightly coloured boats, to hedges that leap out at you to baby fences the most basic novice could step over, it has it all. Plus the owners are friendly and happy to help and will even give you a lesson while you frolic around.
COST: £20 PER HORSE
I know an excellent little dressage arena that is available for 15 pounds per hour. Again, there are many of these around, but this one is quiet and right by me, so I know it well and know the people, they are nice. The yard can be found on Downs Road, Epsom, Surrey. Get in touch if you would like more details.
You probably can't tell that I like XC schooling ! OK, so anyway, my third recommendation here is Littleton Manor XC Schooling Course in Reigate, Surrey. Great course with brill variety, quite a few new fences including a water complex, lovely hedges, skinnies that will make your eyes water and more. Not only this, but they are now holding BE Events (I think twice per year) which means the course is well maintained.
COST: £25 PER HORSE
Loretta Lodge, Epsom Downs has to be the best place for doing fast canter/ gallop work. The ground is good and you don't have to worry about your horse falling down a hole.
OK, so I am sure you can see a trend here, but good XC courses are hard to come by. My final recommendation for XC courses has to be the Mid Surrey Pony Club Field on Hurst Road, Walton on the Hill, Surrey. This course is a little smaller and probably better for young horses and children but it has a bit of everything and its fun. Last time I went it was 30 pounds per horse. There is plenty of parking and they have showjumps out in the summer months.
